Considering Adult Orthodontic Treatment?

Considering Adult Orthodontic Treatment?

Since starting my private practice in 1992, I have observed that the number of adults seeking orthodontic treatment has increased every year. For whatever reason, the percentage of adults in active treatment has grown from about 15% to over 30% in 2017. What are the pros and cons of adult treatment and how is it different from adolescent treatment? I love my adult patients. They are typically better informed, more motivated, follow instructions better, and usually have better oral hygiene than adolescents. With the availability of information on the Internet, most adult patients have a better understanding of their own…

What is Invisalign and How Does It Move Teeth (Part 2)?

(This is Part 2 of a 2-part Invisalign post. Part 1 of this article discussed the design and manufacturing of Invisalign aligners.) After your Invisalign aligners have been designed by your orthodontist and manufactured by Align Technology, the entire set is shipped to your doctor’s office. There is more to achieving a successful result however than merely handing a box full of plastic shells to a patient. If that were not the case, Align would merely ship the aligners directly to the patient and cut out the “middleman.” There are three additional procedures provided by your orthodontist at the delivery…

What is Invisalign and How Does It Move Teeth (Part 1)?

Before 1997, practically the only way to straighten the teeth was with braces. While colored rubber bands made kids a little more excited about having treatment, adults were less enthusiastic, even if the braces were tooth colored or attached on the inside of the teeth. In 1997, a company called Align Technology introduced a technique for moving teeth using a series of customized clear aligners they called Invisalign. Invisalign is an orthodontic system comprised of a series clear plastic shells that fit tightly around the teeth. Picture the thermoformed plastic packaging surrounding most items you purchase at retail stores. This…

Do Orthodontic Braces Hurt?

One of the most basic and sincere questions that I get asked by potential patients is, “Do braces hurt?” If you’ve read any of my other articles, you know that I’m a straight shooter and I tell it like it is. Here’s what it feels like to get braces. Although the retractors used to hold the tongue and cheeks out of the way may be a little uncomfortable, the process of conditioning, rinsing, drying, and sealing a tooth is completely painless. Neither is there any pain when the orthodontist places a bracket (brace) nor when the technician cures the cement…

My Thoughts on Do-It-Yourself Orthodontics

My Thoughts on Do-It-Yourself Orthodontics

I have received several questions about a new company called the SmileDirectClub (formerly SmileCareClub). The slogan on their website is “Invisible aligners done at home” and their claim is “Identical results for less than 50% of the others.” In a nutshell, their process involves taking a set of impressions and photos of yourself at home, mailing them away to their company, and then receiving a set of aligners that you wear to sequentially move your own teeth until you have a “perfectly straight smile” in 4 to 8 months. Could it be that easy? Does it work? Here are my…
