Why Are My Braces Having Trouble Closing the Spaces Between My Teeth?

One of the most frustrating problems that occurs during orthodontic treatment (or reappears afterwards) is space between the teeth that just won’t close. This may be due the teeth themselves, the bone around the teeth, or interference from teeth in the other arch. Let’s look at each of these possible causes. The most common reason spaces don’t close (or stay closed) is the size, shape, or position of the teeth themselves. A tooth may be too narrow at the top, too narrow at the bottom, or just too small overall. Such a tooth just can’t fill the entire space between…

How Long Will My Braces Be On?

The estimated time that your braces will be on is not just an average quoted by your orthodontist to every patient, nor is it a number that is determined by the kind of braces or specific treatment technique employed. How long you’ll have your braces on is dependent upon the problems that exist in your mouth at the beginning of treatment and the goals that you and your orthodontist have for how you want them to look at the end. Here are some of the important things that will affect the length of your treatment. Let’s start at the end…

How to Clean an Orthodontic Retainer

Orthodontic retainers are the devices that orthodontists give patients to minimize the movement of their teeth after the braces have been removed. As I have discussed in other articles about retention, retainers are forever! There is no part of the human body that does not sag or wrinkle with age, and the teeth are no exception. Since you’re going to need a retainer from now on, let’s talk about how to keep it clean. First of all, realize that all retainers get dirty and wear out with use. Like contact lenses or shoes that are worn daily, your retainer will…

When Do I Need a New Orthodontic Retainer?

Perhaps the happiest day of treatment for orthodontic patients is the day the braces come off. Patients are happy. Parents are happy. Doctors are happy! Getting your braces off however is more like a “commencement” from high school than a graduation from college. No matter what treatment was provided, no matter how perfectly the teeth were aligned, the day the braces come off is just the start of a life-long need to retain (or hold) the teeth in the best position possible. Lifetime retention should not come as a surprise to anyone as there is nothing else on the human…

My Orthodontic Retainer Isn’t Fitting Any More

My Orthodontic Retainer Isn't Fitting Any More

Orthodontic retainers are devices that we orthodontists give our patients to keep their teeth as straight as possible after their braces come off. I say “as possible” because as I’ve explained in several other blog posts, there is no retainer that can prevent all tooth movement. Even retainers that are glued to every tooth allow some change. The goal is keeping these changes to a minimum. Some movement following the removal of braces is not only acceptable, it is welcome. “Settling,” as we call it, means that the teeth erupt and drift slightly so that they actually fit BETTER than…
