My Orthodontist Wants to Remove Healthy Teeth

My Orthodontist Wants to Remove Healthy Teeth

One objection that some patients have to getting orthodontic treatment is that they just don’t want to have “healthy teeth” removed. Is it wrong to remove teeth when there is seemingly nothing wrong with them? Are there alternatives to removing healthy teeth? As I’ve explained in other articles, there are several reasons why orthodontists prescribe the removal of permanent teeth in some treatment plans. The most common are crowding, overbite, protrusive teeth, and asymmetries. While it is may be theoretically possible to treat all of these orthodontic problems without removing teeth, orthodontists must consider the overall picture when determining if…

Extraction of One Lower Incisor for Orthodontic Treatment

Every now and then I’ll get a question from a reader whose doctor has recommended the removal of a single lower incisor to fix their crowding. Why would anyone remove just one lower incisor? Is this an accepted treatment technique? What are the pros and the cons? In some patients it seems that the only crooked teeth are those right down in front. It is tempting to ask, “Why don’t you just pull out one of the overlapping ones? Although the technique is not new, the removal of a single lower incisor has recently experienced a resurgence with the increased…

Is It Possible to Treat All Orthodontic Patients without Removing Teeth?

I have been writing this blog now for over three years, have had almost 500,000 visitors, and have responded to over 2000 comments. No subject has attracted more attention than the removal of permanent teeth. A few skeptical readers have suggested that orthodontists remove teeth to make more money, because they are uneducated or old fashioned, or even that they just don’t care about the looks of their patients after treatment.  I would like to use this month’s post to address these three concerns. One visitor suggested that orthodontists recommend the removal of teeth to make more money. The truth…

Does My Child Need To Have Baby Teeth Removed?

One of the most common questions I get from parents in my office and on this blog is whether or not their child should have baby teeth removed. Most baby teeth (primary or “milk” teeth) fall out on their own. There are times however when having them removed by your dentist is not only necessary, but beneficial. Conversely, there are times when you should not have baby teeth removed. While I cannot diagnose your child’s problems online, here are some general guidelines to help you understand when removing primary teeth is appropriate. For a detailed explanation of when baby teeth…

Why does my orthodontist only want to remove two teeth in the upper arch?

Why does my orthodontist only want to remove two teeth in the upper arch?

The articles that attract the most comments on my blog are those addressing the removal of permanent teeth (also called pulling or extracting teeth). I sympathize with parents and patients who are worried about having perfectly healthy teeth extracted for orthodontic purposes. The explanations I’ve provided in other articles have helped many patients to understand why this can’t be avoided in many cases (see Are There Alternatives to Having Teeth Removed for Orthodontic Treatment?, Will Having Teeth Removed Ruin My Face?, and Why Do I Need Teeth Removed for My Braces?). Today’s blog post addresses a specific extraction pattern that…
