Why Aren’t My Child’s Permanent Teeth Coming In?

Why Aren’t My Child’s Permanent Teeth Coming In?

Did your son or daughter lose a baby tooth months ago and there is still no sign of a replacement tooth? Here are two common reasons (and three rare ones) why this sometimes happens. First, for a permanent tooth to erupt into place, there must be sufficient space. The permanent teeth in the front of the mouth are much wider than the baby teeth they replace. Ideally, by the time a baby tooth is lost, there should be extra space on either side of it so that the permanent tooth will have plenty of room. If there is not enough…

Is All Orthodontic Treatment The Same?

An attractive, healthy smile is an asset that can last a lifetime. Not only will orthodontic treatment influence how you feel about yourself, it will also contribute to how healthy and stable your teeth are in the long run. Awarding “the contract” to the right orthodontist for your family is too important to simply accept the lowest bid. All smiles are not created equally and just because a dentist has a license is no guarantee that you’ll be happy with the results. By comparison they are actually one of the best values in medicine today! My 21-year-old son had Lasik surgery this past summer. The total treatment time for his screening appointment (1 hour), procedure (30 minutes), and one follow-up visit (15 minutes) was 1 hour 45 minutes. The fee was $4700. The ophthalmologist required payment…

Invisalign Facts and Fiction

Invisalign is one of the most amazing innovations in orthodontics in the past 20 years. Straightening teeth without braces has encouraged millions of patients who would have never considered treatment otherwise to finally get their smiles fixed. As exciting as this technology is however, it is important that we separate facts from fiction. Fiction: Invisalign can be used to correct all orthodontic problems. Fact: Although the technology is getting better, there are still some complex movements that cannot be treated as efficiently or effectively with aligners. Cases which require the extraction of bicuspids are just one example. Fiction: Invisalign is…

Limitations of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Limitations of Early Orthodontic Treatment

I am a big fan of early orthodontic treatment. I treated all three of my own children with two-phased treatment and would do it again. Wonderful things can be accomplished during the first phase of a two-phased treatment. It is time, however, that I “fess up” and explain the things that interceptive care will not accomplish for your child. A lot of the problems we fix through orthodontic treatment are genetic and no matter how accurate our diagnosis and treatment plan, we just can’t overcome the patient’s DNA. There are other corrections that can’t be made in young children because…
